Czech Republic, which was always well-known for its picture books, puppet shows, and animations, has also produced many masterpieces of movie poster design. By the 1960s, a new generation of graphic artists represented by Karel Teissig, Milan Grygar, and Zdeněk Ziegler had departed from their background of socialist realism. They established their own style in the movie poster genre, using their ingenuity to extract the essence of a film and sometimes transforming it boldly.
This exhibition, co-hosted by National Film Center, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, introduces 82 movie posters made from the late 1950s to the 1980s during the Czechoslovakian era owned by "Terry Posters", a gallery in Prague specializing in movie posters. It focuses on posters for Czechoslovakian films which were called "Czech New Wave" in the 1960s, for films from European countries and the US, and moreover the movie posters for Japanese films, to propose the tense feeling, grace, and humor brought about by the encounter of films and graphic design.
