Shimura Fukumi, Geranium Thunbergii, 2000

 Weaving threads dyed in natural dyes made from plants and vegetables, Shimura Fukumi has developed her own unique world of fabrics in the field of contemporary textiles.
 Garnering high praise for her achievements, Shimura was certified as a holder of important intangible cultural properties in 1990, and was awarded the 30th Kyoto Prize in 2014.
 From her earliest works to her latest pieces, this exhibition explores the whole gamut of Shimura Fukumi's artistic expression throughout her 60-year career as a textile artist, thereby delving deep into the essence of her art and its appeal.
