Kitazawa Museum of Art
YAMAGUCHI Kayo (1899-1984) was born in Kyoto in 1899 and begun his studies under NISHIMURA Goun in 1912. He entered the Kyoto City Specialized School for Painting in 1916 and won his first award in the 10th annual Bunten (Ministry of Education Exhibition). He also flourished by receiving high awards at the annual Teiten (Imperial Academy Exhibition) in both 1927 and 1928.
He has been famous for his paintings of animals particularly. Having followed the traditions of Shijo and Maruyama schools he learnt by NISHIMURA Goun and TAKEUCHI Seiho, he created paintings with techniques of modern western style painting and innovative Nihonga.

On the other hand, his efforts in training the next generation of painters also deserve special mention for he spent many years teaching at the Kyoto City Specialized School of Painting and later at the Kyoto City Specialized School of Fine Arts (both now Kyoto City University of Arts). Moreover, with the sudden death of his teacher NISHIMURA Goun in 1938, Kayo formed the painting study group Shinchokai. Crowning his many achievements, he received the Order of Cultural Merit in 1956.
This exhibition is the second retrospective of the artist at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. We will introduce oeuvre of Yamaguchi Kayo through approximately 75 representative paintings, including newly discovered works, sketches, and large and small scale preliminary paintings. We will also introduce the artist himself, who continued to paint a realm of birds and flowers and animals through a keen sensitivity and outstanding acumen. We hope that visitors to this exhibition will enjoy the works of this outstanding artist who captured the radiance of life itself.
